Weekend in Review

I’m currently listening to: Owen - Bad News

I am ready for it to start feeling like fall. Honestly, it is September 23; 92 degrees is no longer a legitimate high temperature for the day.

However, I did get to spend all weekend attending a myriad of concerts, which were not (for the most part) as obnoxious as this unseasonal weather. I would like to take the time now to thank Andrew Bird, Owen, Okkervil River, and The Headlights for putting together a fabulous weekend for me. Yes my weekend started on Wednesday, following the footsteps of my friends in Hey Mercedes (who I got to see last weekend). Here is a quick rundown of the performances of the bands I listed above:

Okkervil River - Playing a very balanced mix of Stage Names, Blacksheep Boy, and their older material, this Austin band kicked the weekend off in style. Will Sheff was amazing, and a great time was had by all (except maybe the underage highschoolers who kept begging me to buy them drinks). I think the highlight for me was the slow transition into “For Real.”

Andrew Bird - If you have listened to his music, you already know that Andrew Bird is talented. However, if you have attended one of his live shows, you know that he is one of the most entertaining performers gracing eardrums today. Watching Andrew carefully construct the many layers to his songs on samplers before each song was incredible. It is impossible for me to fathom how he is able to hear all of these pieces in his head in order to bring them together perfectly at a later point in the song. Attending this show at the Krannert Center for the Performing Arts (with its perfect acoustics) only made this even more special.

Owen - Owen leads the industry when it comes to creating music that goes wonderful with the fall season. I could listen to him softly play the guitar for an entire week straight without tiring of it. I love the conversations between songs almost as much as the improvised lyrics. More people need to take notes from Mike Kinsella when it comes to independent music. Once again, the Pygmalion Festival deserves props for booking him in an intimate little coffee shop instead of Canopy Club.

Headlights - Finally, I had friends at the show with me (thanks Andy and Steph!). The Headlights have been working on a new album, and I could not be more excited for them. I am definitely a fan of the five piece band they have assembled. The bass guitar really fills in the sound at the live shows. Watching a band play to their home crowd is always a privilege, especially when its also your home.

I’m currently listening to: Spoon - Finer Feelings

First, I would like to say that I think if I had a camera, I would be much more likely to blog. Why, you ask? Because then I could just post pictures of the fun stuff I do instead of trying to find the words to describe it.

Last week was filled with job interviews and stress, so it only made sense that I didn’t do any work this weekend.

Instead, Andy and I went up to Chicago to see Hey Mercedes’ reunion show at the Threadless Grand Opening Party. I always enjoy the conversations we have on these car rides, and the band was awesome, therefore it was a good time all around. The concert served as a type of foreshadowing for the fantastic I will be having this weekend as I attend the Pygmalion Music Festival up here in Champaign. I know, you are all jealous.

As a side note, I watched the Red Sox/Yankees game last night, and despite the loss, it was a great game. I am definitely ready for October and post-season baseball, who is with me?

DVD Commentaries

Pan's Labyrinth

My newest media obsession (the list keeps getting longer) is the DVD commentary. I recently watched the commentaries for both Pan’s Labyrinth and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. Both of these movies are exceptional, and while both commentaries were interesting, I must admit that Guillermo del Toro stole the show with his commentary. From the use of color to the pattern of scenes, his entire thought process was fascinating. Since I basically have three weekends in a row (last weekend, this two day break during the week, and then next weekend), I predict that a good portion of this time will be spent watching movies/commentaries.

I hope you all have wonderful holidays, I wish it was going to be dry enough to go watch fireworks.

Why I Love Sports

Lebron James

I never liked the NBA. I’ll be the first to admit it. Yet for some reason this year, I decided to watch the playoffs. Maybe it was the joy of watching ex-Illini Deron Williams come into his own for Utah, or maybe it was Lebron. Either way, I am glad that I did. Not because I am ready to declare basketball one of my favorite sports, but because it helped me to understand my passion for sports. You see, I’m a sucker for a hero; I love watching one individual put a group of people on his back and carry them through a pressure situation.

After all, isn’t that why we all watch Lost? There is something magical about watching Jack lead a group of crash victims on an island. Just like it was phenomenal watching Lebron put up 48 points and single handedly lead the Cav’s to the finals. You see even though its not my sport, its still incredible to watch. It will never come close to watching Pedro throw those shutout innings of relief in the playoffs, or laughing in shock after Big Papi tacked on another game winning hit, but its still better than nothing.

Now I realize that not many of you read this blog to gain my insight on sporting events, so I’ll give you all an update on life in Austin. Its been great so far. Last night a bunch of us interns went out to 6th street and had some fun. A few of the University of Texas natives gave us a tour of all the different bars and venues, and I must say I was overwhelmed. Although that might have had something to do with the massive (and I’m talking a 3:1 ratio) collection of bikers. Apparently they have some annual festival down here each year.

As for work, its been going nicely. I am done with my training, and started on my project for the summer. It seems to be pretty manageable, and I feel like I have already started making progress. I get along with all of the people in my department really well, and its actually been fun getting up and heading in to work each morning. Of course that might have something to do with the fat paycheck I’m earning ;).

Arrested Development

Hi guys,

I really don’t have too much to report here. I’m pretty tired right now. The more I rewatch Arrested Development, the more I am convinced FOX is pathetic for not marketing the show better. The entire production was just so fantastic on so many different levels. Right now I still can’t get the jingle that always plays when Michael is doing stuff with Marta out of my head. I call it a jingle because after searching through the Season One DVD Extras, I found that the short clip they always play includes all of the lyrics they ever wrote for the song. I never realized that the vast majority of the music on that show was created specifically for the episodes. Just another tidbit that makes me appreciate it even more.
In other news, I am most likely getting a new car before I head down to Austin. When I say new car, I really mean new, used car. I am way too cheap to buy a new car, so I will probably end up getting a used car from within the last couple of years. Can’t say what yet, talk to me after April 28th.

I don’t have anything else to say really, aside from the fact that I am disappointed I still haven’t gotten a chance to redesign my blog yet. Someday…

P.S. who caught The Office’s shoutout to Arrested Development in the Safety Training episode (indubitably anyone?).

Moonstruck Mexican Hot Chocolate

Who has Mexican Hot Chocolate from Moonstruck?  That’s right, its me.  I owe Andy a huge thanks for this wonderful treat.  I might actually be excited to wake up and attend ECE class at 8am tomorrow just to try out my new drink.  Aside from this, I have little to report.  I went to a Christmas Parade and watched It’s a Wonderful Life with my Covenant Group Saturday night.  I had never seen the movie before (I know, its kind of sad), but I enjoyed it a lot.  I feel like I am really starting to build friendships and meaningful relationships with the people in the group.  This should be further increased by Chili dinner/white elephant gift exchange tomorrow night.  Well, I should get back to work, 473 is calling me.

Rocky Votolato Is My Hero

I’m currently listening to: Rocky Votolato - Suicide Medicine - Suicide Medicine

Rocky Votolato

Wednesday night I had the privilege of watching Rocky Votolato and friends in concert. I must say, it was a wonderful time. The night started off with a band known as Casados. They were a smaller, local band that had a pretty interesting sound. I wasn’t sold on the singer’s voice, but the lyrics were pretty grand. Following Casados, was William Elliot Whitmore. In case you aren’t familiar with him (I wasn’t), he sings with an extremely deep voice, with a really southern style of music. While this might not be my favorite genre, I cannot deny his incredible stage presence. The man must have downed four or five shots of whiskey during his set, in the process of telling us stories between all of his songs. I don’t know if I have run into a more genuine musician in a very long time. After his set was over, he proceeded to carry a trash bag full of candy around the bar as a post-Halloween treat.

Next Rocky took the stage. He played an electric set, which was a little bit disappointing, but I quickly got over it. I would say that the majority of his songs came from Makers, followed by Suicide Medicine (both of which I bought after the show). Once again, there was just an extreme candidness in the way he performed. He told us the stories behind a number of his songs, many of which involved his wife and kids. At this point in the tour, Rocky had been away from his family for more than a month, and I could tell that it was beginning to wear on him. I couldn’t imagine leaving my loved ones for that long, just to travel around and play in a different city every night. It must be pretty lonely. Luckily, you could tell that he, William Elliot Whitmore, and Lucero (who wasn’t performing tonight for some reason) must really enjoy playing together, as they complemented each other’s music so well. At the end, Rocky ended the night with “Makers.” It was wonderful.

I don’t think that I could have asked for a better concert. The atmosphere was wonderful– laid back and informal. The musicians were humble, and grateful just to get a chance to play their songs. I don’t think I have ever met more polite performers (in they way they appreciated the crowd and thanked the sound technicians). I only wish that I had someone who liked good music up here to attend these shows with. If I hadn’t been forced to sit alone for the majority of the night, it would have been perfect.

Cardinals World Series Champs?

Adam Wainwright Delivers

It looks like the Cardinals have all but locked away their World Series. After a lot of soul searching, I’ve come to terms with this. For some reason it still hurts to watch the Cardinals succeed after hurting me for so long (even though my Red Sox won it first). I guess its the knowledge that they are not (even close to being) the best team in baseball. However, I was recently reminded that the champions of baseball are often found in unlikely places. For example, who would have given the Marlins a chance to win the World Series (let alone two)?

Sometimes– although less so than other sports– the series really boils down to which team is hotter at the current moment. Jeff Suppan and Jeff Weaver are not great pitchers, they just happen to be pitching well. While Cardinal fans will never admit that this was a fluke, a statistical anomaly, I (and the other baseball fanatics of the world) understand this. However, we must also remember that just because it wasn’t supposed to happen this way, doesn’t mean that it didn’t, or that it wasn’t magical for the fans of St. Louis. I guess I’ll let them have their celebration. After all, they watched me have mine in 2004.

Firefox Spellcheck

I must say, that after a day of light usage, the best new feature in Firefox v2.0 has to be the in browser spellcheck. It makes blogging so much easier. No longer do I have to open a new tab and go to dictionary.com and cheat in order to appear intelligent.

Today was spent taking a CS232 midterm (which I did alright on), reading PHP articles, attending SigBOT, watching the World Series’ rain delay, and avoiding homework. The only really strange thing that happened today was the fact that I forgot to set my alarm, yet somehow awoke at 7:35AM in time to make it to my 8am class. I’m a hero, I know.

Blue Bic Matic Grip Pencil

Blue Bic Matic Grip PencilI would like to preface this sincere (but admittedly ridiculous) post by promising all of you that I am not kidding. It’s sad, I know. Judge me later.

As some of you who are close to me may be aware, I have used the exact same model of pencil since my sophomore year of high school. In fact, I have used the exact same color of this model of pencil since that point in time. Over the years, this pencil has become a comfort for me. When I go to do work where I did not bring my own pencil– it feels different– I notice it every time. You can ask my sister about this; every time my mother would come home with a bulk package of these pencils, in an assorted array of colors, I would immediately choose out all of the blue pencils, and leave the rest for my family. It has always been this way, in fact when I left for college my mother bought me my own package of the pencils, and I have since lent away all of the other colored pencils, and kept only the blue ones. Unfortunately, it appears that this year my stock was not replenished. I have only two of these precious pencils left, and both are lacking an eraser and have just one stick of lead.

Today I visited Walgreens, with the hope of refilling my stash. However, to my shock, Walgreens does not appear to carry this model (in any color!). I was offended to say the least. I admit, I have bought a few inferior pencils, in case it comes to the worst. However, I am now petitioning my sister, please send me some more pencils. I know that we probably have a ridiculous supply of them hidden somewhere in the house. I will pay you back for the shipping, but I am dead serious when I say that it would make my week if I were to receive an ample supply of these pencils sometime in the near future.

Interviews and Apartments

I haven’t written anything in a while, and I’m kind of bored, so I figured that I would post. Unfortunately, I really don’t have a lot to say. I haven’t been doing much lately. I had two midterms and an interview with Caterpillar this week. All of these went well (I hope). Andy and I also talked with Matt and Alex tonight (over a wonderful feast prepared by Matt) of the possibility of living in a five room apartment next year. I think that would be pretty incredible. Not much else to say. I was planning on heading home next weekend, but its Homecoming, so I think I will be returning to the STL on the week of the 13th instead.

Professionalism

I’m currently listening to: Rosie Thomas - If Songs Could Be Held - Pretty Dress

Over the last few days, as a result of an email correspondence with a certain individual who shall remain nameless, I have been reminded of the need for professionalism in the workplace. I guess I should use the word “workplace” loosely, considering this is just a professional organization which I belong to at my university. However, I feel that the term should still apply, considering this is a listserv primarily used for communication about various projects the club is working on.

At any rate, Andy and I are the officers for an organization, which is a part of a larger organization. As a result, the network administrator for the parent organization has a subscription to our listserv (even though he does not contribute to the project). For some reason, this person feels personally obligated to respond to every post made on the listserv. I understand that some people feel an urge to respond to everything they read, and I would not be bothered by this.  However this person has posted zero constructive responses since I joined the mailing list. In fact, I would characterize the vast majority of his posts as blatantly aggressive and negative. This has negatively affected our organization, as our members grow tired of constantly battling against a person who does not even attend our meetings. I just think that this problem could be solved easily if some individuals understood the importance of displaying professionalism when you participate in an organization. It seems that this person has badly ruined their credibility within the organization (and of the organization as a whole) because they do not take the time to consider how to respond in a professional fashion.

When you hold a position of power within your organization (or company), you represent, not only yourself, but also the people you work for. Sometimes it is easy to get caught up in an argument and forget this, so I figured everyone could use a reminder every once in a while.

I’m currently listening to: Joanna Newsom - The Milk-Eyed Mender - Peach, Plum, Pear

I should be doing homework right now, but I am having a little bit of difficulty concentrating, and I’ve been feeling increasingly guilty for not posting on this blog in a while, so I decided I would rather waste time doing this instead. Andy and I went to see The Last Kiss last night, and it really wasn’t worth subjecting yourself to the amount of inappropriate content. The theme was pretty depressing (all relationships are doomed?) and it just kept feeling like things I had already seen before (Crash, Garden State). We then attended a party where I got crap spilled all over me. Luckily, my white shirt resists stains like a true champion, and it is one again spotless after spending the night in my washer. Aside from that, I’m just trying to get some work done.

Next weekend however, should be a lot of fun. There is a music festival on campus, and I look forward to seeing The City on Film and The Reputation on Friday night. I might also drop in on Of Montreal on Saturday if I am feeling especially bored. It should serve as a nice break from the ordinary. Then, the weekend after that I am back in the STL to celebrate my friend Nina’s birthday. Should be good times.

True Story

I’m currently listening to:Brand New - Your Favorite Weapon - Jude Law and a Semester Abroad

Alright, so last night, I watched the last two episodes of season two of Lost. I’m not going to lie, waiting until October to see a new episode is going to kill me. I’ll probably be going through withdrawl. However, the number of pseudo-answers and mysteries that were developed in the last few episodes have definitely given me enough to ponder. Now my sister needs to catch up so that I can discuss all of my questions and theories with her, or at least post them here without giving her spoilers. However, the story I am telling really starts after I go to bed.

I finally fell asleep sometime close to 1:45am. At around two, I hear Andy open the front door, and some girl asks if we have a cheese grater. Then she asks if Andy is in Fin 300 and something about a screwdriver, and before I know it, there are two girls in our apartment sitting on the lovesac. At this point, I decided I should probably get up and throw some clothes on to investigate. Apparently, when you are high at 2am, tacos are the food of choice, and these poor girls had all of the ingredients aside from cheese. Unfortunately for them, we had just used all of our cheese on the tacos we ate for dinner. Ironic, I know. We then spent the next half hour or so visiting with one of the few social tenants of 1010 W Stoughton (the other girl didn’t really live here), learning about this mythical courtyard that apparently exists in our building, among other things. After a while, they decided it was time to re-embark on their mission of finding a cheese grater, and returning the disguisting one they borrowed from some girl they didn’t trust. This morning, on the way to class, I ran into them again and they informed me that they had in fact found a cheese grater (and a six sided one at that!). I’m pretty amazed because after all, who keeps a cheese grater in a college apartment?  That is my story for yesterday.

I’m currently listening to: The Ataris - Blue Skies, Broken Hearts… Next 12 Exits - 1-15-96

As the title states, I am back in the fine city of Urbana, IL.  Currently it is raining, and the mud on the sidewalks outside of my apartment is quite annoying.  However, I only have one more reason to leave the apartment today– and it isn’t until five, so I’m not too worried.

In other news, I had a good time this weekend.  I got to spend a ton of time with my sister, and watch a lot of Lost.  That show is seriously as addicting as heroin.  I just can’t stop watching.  I also got to hang with Pat, Jen, Ross, and Nina at various times during the weekend.  Its always good to see all of them.  We saw The Illusionist on Saturday.  I must admit it was pretty disappointing.  A mediocre performance by Ed Norton and the always pathetic Jessica Biel, coupled with a predictable plot and dreary setting, really drained this movie of any potential it might have had.  Oh well, it was still a good break from work/school.
