I’ve finally gotten sick of using NewsGator, so I think I’m going to hunker down and write my own RSS aggregator. I want to integrate all of my Twitter, Tumblr, Wordpress, Blogger, and News feeds into a site I can manage on my own. Plus, I kind of miss PHP and want a chance to use the Zend Framework again. I’m a nerd.

OpenID
What is this new OpenID thing I speak of?
Essentially, it is a way of identifying yourself on a number of sites without having to create an account everywhere, or enter the same information repeatedly. For example, I can now log in to this site by putting: http://jlayman.myvidoop.com into the OpenID field. Since my OpenID provider keeps track of all of my personal details and verifies my identify, I am done.
Where can I get an OpenID?
I’m glad you asked. If you’re a part of Vox, Technorati, or a number of other sites you may already have one. However, I chose to use a standalone OpenID provider (myVidoop). The advantage of this, is that they also have a feature that allows me to store all of my passwords to other, non-OpenID sites, with relative ease. Also, myVidoop implements some really cool security features, such as an “ImageShield” which leads to increased security without a password. If you want to read more about why, you can check out Chris Shiflett’s article, because he describes it much better than I could.

I’m sorry for the geeky article, but I just spent three hours that I should have been studying for finals hacking the Wordpress plugin so that it actually works with my site.
Why Reinvent The Wheel?

You know, with my weblog I have always taken a lot of pride in having a non-standard design. Unfortunately, I no longer feel that I can put in the effort to make my designs look good and integrate well. For instance, if you tried to browse the archives of my site any time in the last three months you know that it looked terrible.
To remedy this solution, I have installed a theme I downloaded from somewhere. I think that this will look a lot nicer, and it reflects something that I have come to learn all too well in Computer Science. You shouldn’t waste your time tinkering with things that have already been done well. Instead, you should leverage the preexisting work, and improve upon the current framework. Who knows, maybe I’ll tweak this template to look even better? Probably not.
Anyways, enjoy the new look.

I must say, that after a day of light usage, the best new feature in Firefox v2.0 has to be the in browser spellcheck. It makes blogging so much easier. No longer do I have to open a new tab and go to dictionary.com and cheat in order to appear intelligent.
Today was spent taking a CS232 midterm (which I did alright on), reading PHP articles, attending SigBOT, watching the World Series’ rain delay, and avoiding homework. The only really strange thing that happened today was the fact that I forgot to set my alarm, yet somehow awoke at 7:35AM in time to make it to my 8am class. I’m a hero, I know.
